Downtown Riverside

I've been considering a drive up here for quite awhile now, and I found the opportunity to shoot some pictures when one of my good friends celebrated her birthday over at the Salted Pig. Afterwards, I thought I would take a nice little walk around City Hall and the courthouse to see what kind of pictures I could get. I don't normally shoot at night, so This was a big challenge.

The only real issues I seemed to have on this shoot was the white balance issue. If I left my camera on Auto or nightime/candle mode, every spot that had a light of some sort gave me a rediculous orange glow. So I switched to a colder mode and thats why everything is either bluish or greenish yellow. The other issue was a focusing issue. I had to manually focus for most of the shots. But it wasn't too hard, even though the eye I use for shooting is my bum eye.

Riverside really has been one of the better downtowns that Ive traveled to this year. It might be because UCR is right across the freeway. It might also be because there isn't a damn thing to do in the Inland Empire. Whichever, it was a nice nice place to look at. And go eat at the Salted Pig. They had a bad ass hamburger with a fried egg on top, with a yolk in it too!!

I like the "Emerald city" alley and the first one :)

The alley was pretty cool to see. I knew right away when I was looking down there that it was a winner. Same with the first one. That was actually a test shot to see if I could focus manually at night.

Thanks!
I really liked the blue/green coloring that you got for these night shots. I think it's good to get away from the typical night shots that are full of halos and yellow/orange starbursts. I really like the alley shot and the fountain shots.

Also I thought you might get a chuckle out of this since you are a photographer: http://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/2012/09/2...

Thanks for sharing that link. That strip nails the exact definition of what photography is all about and Calivin and Hobbs was the best strip EVER!! :-) Well, except for The Far Side.

I'm pretty glad these shots came out the way they have. The orange looked so horrible, I have no idea why anybody would use it. Now if only I could find another place that was as safe or empty as Riverside was at night.
I used to live in Chino, right up the highway from Riverside... You're right, the Inland Empire is a hole. Some damn good Mexican restaurants out there though... Like the clock pic.

Christ, is there a city in socal you haven't lived in?

Chino isn't too bad of a spot to live in because its right on the edge between boring and everywhere else. The only good thing they have out there are the two Drive In theaters. After all these years they are still just as bad ass! I just went about a month ago.

Damn, I think I want some mexican food for lunch. Thanks for the comments Joker!
Haha, yeah... I've only lived in a handful of SoCal cities, but somehow you've managed to cover them...

I love the arches! And the fountain, parking, alleyway, hydrant?, and THE PIG! I just love downtown Riverside - it's nice to see a night-time perspective. If you ever come back to the area, you may want to check out the rotunda at the Mission Inn. It's adjacent to the Trattoria - near 6th and Main. It's kind of tricky to get in, as ground level access is protected by a key code(employees only!), but you can get there through the hotel side. We'll take ya there one day, and show ya around. It's absolutely beautiful! Great captures, Tom!!

Hey Natalie! Thanks for the complements. Damn, I was so close to Mission Inn. I would love to go see the rotunda with you guys! Thanks for inspiring me to go up and shoot up there.

I really need to hit up Mt. Rubidoux as well. Oh, and that trail in Cucamonga you were going to climb before your mud run, how is that one for vista points? I should think about climbing that mountain sometime too.
The fountain stuff is neat~ I really like the alley one, too.
The lighting is kinda nice with that cooler setting. Kinda relaxing int he dark, like.

That's how it felt walking around that whole area. It was dead empty. Well, now that I mention it, it was fairly creepy out there. And the people that were walking around were making comments about me taking pictures. I was probably about to get robbed like I almost did in Culver City.

Thanks for the complements Cameron!
