Balboa Peninsula

Well, now that the festivities have concluded It's back to business as usual. A couple of weeks ago, a few days after Father's Day, I took a little drive down to Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. I was supposed to go in the evening but I was bored off my rocker and dropped on down in the late afternoon.

If any of you are in the area, there is an incredible body boarding spot called The Wedge. Its a place where crazy .....  err, I mean very good body boarders and surfers go for some awesome waves while being only a foot above the sand on the water. An incredible experience that one must see, even if you don't like us spongers.

Special thanks to the Joker for the excellent idea. I'll go down at night next time like you suggested.

I thought the Fun Zone closed years ago... Is Charlie's Chili still there?

Its damn near closed from what I saw. They took out the haunted house ride, and I only saw one arcade and no skee ball there, boo. The ferris wheel is still operating though, and it had a fair amount of people on it too, as did the ferry to Balboa Island. Too bad it doesn't look anything like it was portrayed on Arrested Development.

It looks like charlie's chili is still there. Or at least google maps says it is. I didn't stop by the pier this time.
The colors on that rainbow thingy are unreal!! WTF is that?

It was a really cool windmill I saw walking by the house that are right up there on the sand. It took me a few shots to get one like that. :-)
Quite a collection!

Haha, I agree with Chris - the colours on the wheel are awesome! Not sure what I'm looking at though....

I like the b&w beach one. It looks like something was dragged off to sea.

The blue doors are cool too - - well centred.

Hey, thanks for the great comments. Much appreciated. :-)
Okay... now I understand what the deal was all about. Have a friend whose family got a piece of Balboa when it was still kind of 'unknown'... holly El Camino Real! For better or for worse, your posts are making me remember California. Remembering California as a place, without all of the people... a beautiful state to be in. A place to just look at what surrounds you. More than enough.

Thank you.

Oh christ, Balboa before it was known? they are sitting on some good real estate now thats for sure. I was kind of jealous walking by these peoples houses until I remembered that they are the first ones gone in a tsunami and then I felt a bit better.

California as a place is one of the worlds greatest wonders. Vast deserts, thick and rich forrests, trees as high as the empire state building ( or pretty damn close), but the people are ruining the state. Its getting to the point of inhabitable from what I see and I feel like I live in the loony bin.
I really enjoyed the flower shot but my fave is the door with the stained glass decoration. So pretty!
Now be just a tad jealous; back 10 years ago a gal I knew had family that owned a home down in Balboa. Every once in a while when we felt the mood to hit the beach and go somewhere that is where we would go. We would spend the weekend in a posh little family house right on the beach. I think eventually it ended up sold off as family members started getting old and dying. Guess the younger generations didn't know how to share which I think is an utter shame.
My recent post Smells like violence up in here!

I know how not being able to share is like sometimes. Its the whole older sibling thinks they are right and the younger one thinks their being ripped off. I'm watching a little bit of that going on in my family these days. And yes, I am very jealous. I like that beach because after a certain time the surfers aren't allowed in the water anymore and its free and clear for us bodyboarders. It just happens the day I went last time the water was 59 degrees!! It was real cold!
